‘My mom is pregnant and has stolen the name I wanted to call my future daughter’

A young woman is upset with her mother for choosing the baby name she’s always adored. The 20-year-old shared on Reddit that she’s loved the name Karina since she was a little girl, first hearing it when she was nine while watching a YouTube video featuring a girl with that name.
“It’s such a beautiful name, and I adore it deeply,” she penned. Her parents also appreciated the name, and she would affectionately call all of her stuffed animals and even random inanimate objects Karina.
“I was a typical little girl, playing with baby dolls every day, pretending I was their mom and dressing them, feeding them, all sorts! Their name was always Karina.”
Her parents are relatively young, as her mother had her at 17 years old. She is currently 37 and five months pregnant.
The family recently discovered the gender of the new baby – it’s a girl. Everyone in the family is thrilled about the upcoming addition.
However, a few days ago, the mother announced the chosen name for the baby on Facebook: Karina.
The Reddit poster immediately texted her parents asking if this was a joke, to which they responded no.
Since then, the young woman has been inconsolable, feeling that she can’t give her future child the same name as her younger sister. Her mother told her she’s being overly dramatic.
Reddit users advised her that while it’s an unfortunate situation, she doesn’t have exclusive rights to the name or plans to have children in the near future.
One individual chided: “Get over this crying non-stop. You don’t even have children, your mother also loves this name and when and if you ever have a child, there is nothing stopping you from naming that child Karina.”
Adding insult to injury, they pointed out: “Also, they didn’t steal your dream baby name. You would have needed to own it to have it stolen. You don’t own it.”
